Artist Spotlight: Grandson

In this edition of Po Politickin's Artist Spotlight, we politick with Virginia rapper Grandson. Grandson discusses his music dubbed as "futuristic gangsta rap" and his new mixtape entitled "Loot Skywalker".

Artist Spotlight: Na'Tee

You can say things are looking up for this 24 year old female rap artist from uptown area of New Orleans. After being mentioned in The Source Magazine by G-Unit staff members as an “Artist to Watch” and taking home the most awards at 2010’s NOLA Hip Hop Awards for Lyricist of the Year, Best Female Artist, & Mixtape of the Year, Na’Tee received the news that she’ll be added Grammy Winning Artist Syleena Johnson’s new album. Although naturally some would credit her strides to success to her lyrically ability, her determination, or to her work ethic, Na’Tee told us that her upbringing is what inspires her to keep going in this male dominated field.

“Growing up in the 3rd Ward area of New Orleans prepared me for the harsh realities of this industry,” says this studio junkie. “Unfortunately every since I was 5 years old I had to deal with the fact that both my parents were crack cocaine addicts. The things that most of my classmates took for granted like field trip money or even time with both parents in the household, for instance, was a privilege for me. I had to get things on my own even at a young age. That led me to run ins with the law and over all poor decisions. However, I had faith in the fact that my talent could change my future.” Unfortunately, at the age of 10, her father committed suicide. That death was later described by Na’Tee as “the moment in life that I realized I wanted to live and not just exist.”

When asked to describe herself in three words Na’Tee replied,”intelligent, talented, and blessed” and most of her peers would agree. In 2009 Na’Tee was featured in Hip Hop Weekly Magazine and on G-Unit’s ThisIs50.com as an independent artist on the rise. And that is a definite truth. Not only does she write her own music, but she also records it and mixes it in her own studio, directs and edits her own music videos, and designed (and monitors) both her official website http://www.3dnatee.com and her many popular social sites.

Artist Spotlight: Illecism

Bio:
Eurazmus “Illecism” Forh has had a childhood as diverse as the subject matter and rhyme patterns his listeners have come to expect of him. Commonly referred to as “The Best Rapper You Never Heard Of”, he is the son of Liberian natives and was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Living with his mother, a Sergeant in the U.S. Military, he made short, yet instrumental stops in El Paso, Texas and Gaithersburg, Maryland before finally arriving in Sacramento were he currently resides.

Having a gift for word play at a young age, Illie began his journey as a wordsmith at eleven spending his spare time writing raps. Even though Illecism had little contact with his father until he was fifteen, he credits him as an influential force and role model in his development. During the years he spent living with his mother, Illie was restricted early on from watching or listening to any Hip-Hop, as she deemed the misogamy and glorification of crime could have negative influence on him. Upon hearing the Marshall Mathers LP, (which he would “borrow” from his mother while she was at work) a seed was planted in him to become the best. Thus through numerous lunch table ciphers, over 30 battles in which he holds an impressive and undefeated record, and the daily “sixteen’s” he required of high school friends and group members, H.A.V.O.K. (Heroes and Villains Operating on Kreativity); Illecism’s desire of becoming a master of his craft took him from mere protégée to fulltime student. As a member of Havok, Illie and the group released “Havok Blvd.” a popular mix tape within the high school. Illecism’s name comes from one of his intensely watched lunchtime ciphers, where he said afterwards, “I don’t spit lyricism, I spit illecism”. After graduating from Inderkum High in Natomas, Illie began and later released the Northern California classic mix tape “Have a Refreshment Vol.1” with best friend, Havok member and current producer Nicatyne. This release has garnered him a buzz among the Myspace, internet forum and local audience. He also made a very memorable appearance on DJ Oasis “Well Connected” mixtape.

Illecism’s military upbringing has made him into an organized and hardworking individual, who believes, “If you’re not a master you’re a slave”. He has transferred those values to the training he maintains to truly master his craft. Illie has begun work on his debut album “Freshman Friday”, with a release date to be determined soon.

Artist Spotlight: Sean West

It's no coincidence that the word harmony refers both to music and the peace that can exist within a person. Music has long been known to touch and soothe aspects of people's souls. However, what's even more awe inspiring is how such musical harmony is often drawn from the discords of one's life. From Sam Cooke to R Kelly, the greats have always formed their melodious tunes from the pain, hurt, and neglect in their lives. Even the bliss of love is only recognized from the struggle it took to get there or the times it went neglected or awry. So it is no surprise that the remnants of the challenging and often time traumatic life of SeanFresh manifested itself in his talents of songwriting and singing. It's how he draws his peace from and in the storm.

Unfortunately, it's all too common place nowadays for a young black urban male to grow up in a home without both parents. So when describing Mr. Fresh's relationship with his father who Sean often cites as raising him as much as he raised me or his mother who played intermittent roles in his life, we're not too surprised. Its' also a well known story of how many an inner city youth finds their release through sports, gangs, and music. Check those three off as well as we find an impoverished had born and bred, AAU basketball playing, W.E.P. Blood who was a known standout singer in the Bullock Temple CME choir. Still after his oldest brother shot himself in the head in 1993 and was faced with a permanent handicap, Sean found both his anger and confusion grow to a point that the regular channels couldn't cool. Anger was the outcome. As a teenager, Sean always enjoyed singing and just making music in general and as a result kept close affiliations with all the major studios and producers in Little Rock. Unfortunately, his questioning of his grander purpose led him to not think of it as more than an occasional getaway in the recluse of his mind. Also, his aggressive attitude caused him to direct his energies less on the development of his talent and more on the frustrations of going nowhere fast; a downward spiral to say the least. Then an incident on May 16, 2006 changed his mind set and direction forever more. That was the night when Sean escaped an early meeting with his Savior after he fell asleep at the wheel and was involved in a near fatal multiply car wreck.

During his long recovery process complete with numerous surgeries and rehab, he realized that tomorrow is not only not promised, but is pretty much what you make of it. As the clich's became real, so did his quest to LIVE life not just exist within it. From that day SeanFresh the singer, songwriter, and entertainer was born. A man determined to pass the footsteps of his role models like Brian McKnight, and Sam Cooke to make his music his calling card. And so life goes on. Pain doesn't stop. Neither does heartbreak, struggle, nor misfortunes, however Sean's quest from stardom rooted in humble beginnings and fueled by past aggressions and second chances does. From his serene and touching ballads like Maria Is In Love, to sexy tunes like, School Me, to his Bama Boyz hit producer standout Bourgeois Hoes, SeanFresh has something to say. More importantly he has a truth to bring to the table. One that's pitched in perfect harmony.

DarnGood feat. Enoch the 7th Prophet "Black Inventors" (Video)

The song "Black Inventors" was written by DarnGood and Enoch to educate people about black inventions and the inventors behind the work. "As artist we feel like an important part of African American History, was not being reflected in hip hop music today." "So we decided to do something about it." After hearing the track from DJ S.E., DarnGood wrote his verse, recorded the vocals and sent it to enoch. Once, Enoch heard DarnGood's verse, he approached the record from a different angle in paying respect to female black inventors. "We wanted to paint murals in the minds of people with our lyrics and encourage them to go do the research on what we are rhyming about." Putting together a song like this required the right MC's and the perfect beat to achieve the mission. This is Hip Hip education at its best.
