Artist Spotlight: Jalyn

1. Thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin", could tell us a little bit about yourself?

Thanks for having me man. My name is Jalyn, Im a singer/songwriter originally from the bay area now living in NYC. I grew up in a musical family, the youngest of 10, and Ive been writing and singing pretty much my entire life. Not a day has gone by where I havent felt an overwhelming desire to write something new. Its constant. Im always looking for the next creative high.

2. How was it growing up in San Francisco?

Amazing. The artistic vibe is incredible, and the city is surrounded by mountains and the Pacific ocean. Its inspiring. Ive lived a lot of places in my life, but the bay is always home to me.

3. What is your music background? How long has he been doing this?

My Dad was a choir director, and my mom sang in the choir. All of my brothers and sisters either sing or play instruments - according to my Mom, I was singing and harmonizing when I was 2. I always knew I wanted to do something in music, but I didnt start pursuing it until after high school. Ive been at it for 18 years now.

4. Who are your musical influences?

My earliest influences are Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. They left such a huge impression on me. After that, it ranges from artists like Radiohead to Pat Metheny, ATCQ to Steely Dan and The Beatles to Coltrane. Im all over the place when it comes to music. I love it all.

5. How do you describe your music to people?

Its always a tough question for me given the influences I have. I try not to limit myself creatively. I write all styles of music, but the music that I perform is more along the lines of Alternative / Electro / Soul.

6. What image do you think your music conveys?

Its all about the melody to me. I always strive to create landscapes that are emotionally moving. Im a pretty positive and peaceful dude, so the overall image I try to convey is about peace, hope and love.

7. I was reading one article you did when you was talking about going green with your music? Can you tell me more about that?

After becoming a vegetarian, I really wanted to start being more conscious about the effect that I have on the environment. I started noticing how wasteful I was, and that even a small change in my routine would be a step in the right direction. There really isnt a point to manufacturing thousands of cd's anymore, so all of my future releases will be digital with the exception of a limited amount of box sets that will include extra tracks, print and possibly vinyl. Everything will be made from recycled materials of course. Im also working on a way to power my studio with solar energy.

8. How would you define the word "success"?

When I was a 17 and trying to get a record deal, success to me meant money, fame and being on MTV. The journey that I have been on the last 18 years has taught me that a successful artist is one who is always striving to perfect their craft.

9. What are your immediate music career goals?

To finish writing my 3rd album.

10. Do you have any current projects?

Yes, Im collaborating with a few indie artists, and Ive been caught up in the whole remix craze as of late. The remix I did for Kanye's "Love Lockdown" has been getting a lot of attention. Other than that, I am constantly in the studio writing songs.

11. Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)

Neither. Ive grown accustomed to writing the kind of music I want to write. Knowing what I know about the business, it would have to be the perfect situation for me to even consider signing a deal. Its a dream for any artist to make a living doing what they love, but if you decide to make that happen through the entertainment industry, you better be prepared for it and willing to give up a lot. The business is so seductive. We are constantly subjected to the glamorous side of it, although no one mentions the fact that your favorite artist who has sold millions of records probably hasnt seen a dime from their record sales. The percentage of artists who are successful financially is very small. I would never try to dissuade anyone from trying to be a part of that small percentage, but I think you have to be realistic and understand what you are in for.

12. What's the most important life lesson you have learned so far?

Hit records, money and fame are never true indicators of great music. Music is an individual experience. An artist can be loved by one person and hated by the next. Once Ive written and recorded something that reflects my true feelings, Ive learned to release it and let it go. As long as I am happy with the end result, it doesnt matter what other people think, good or bad. Its a journey, not a destination.

13. Once again, thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin". Any last words for the readers?

My music is your music. I do it because I love it.

Artist Spotlight: Urban Mystic

Po: Thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin". I read that you are a PK (preacher's kid). When listening to your music, I can actually hear your gospel roots. Can you talk a little bit about your upbringing?

I grew up in the church and have been singing since I was five-years-old. Listening to my mom who is the minister of music at my church, and my dad who was the pastor at my church, they gave me a lot of style and my roots. Also, listening to old school artists like Al Green, Bobby Womack and Sam Cooke have definitely influenced my style of singing and my music.

Po: I saw that your third album, the third installment of your Ghetto Revelations saga, GR III: Old School 2 Nu Skool is dropping on April 28, 2009. I was wondering could you tell more about the Ghetto Revelations saga? What was the vision and direction taken in each volume?

Ghetto Revelations – That was my first album and I wanted to introduce myself as a R&B singer. Because my gospel roots are a big part of me and my music, I wanted to show people my soulful side so they could get to know me and understand where I come from.

Ghetto Revelations II- I wanted to incorporate my gospel roots, but also show another side of me- the young side- and incorporate some hip hop. I’m only 24-yrs-old and was motivated to bring both sides together into one album.

GRIII - Again, I wanted to stay true to my roots and give my fans what they want by incorporating old school R&B, with artists like Sam Cooke. I took his classic “A Change Is Gonna Come” and remade it to reflect the changes we have experienced over the past few months with the election of our first Black president, “Obama: A Change Has Come.” Obama was also influenced by the church, and I felt it was important to include that song on my album.
The other side of GRIII, I wanted to give something to my generation, hence the title Old School 2 Nu Skool. That’s where my single “Main Squeeze” featuring Yung Joc comes from. I also included Reggae songs and one Jazz track. The album covers many different genres -- Soul, R&B, Gospel, Hip Hop, Reggae and Jazz.

Po: How was it recording GR III: Old School 2 Nu Skool? Are there any guest appearances on the album?

Recording GRIII was a great experience. Each time I record an album, I’m able to learn, grow and also leave part of myself in my music. There are some guest appearances on the album. Yung Joc is featured on my single “Main Squeeze.” Beenie Man is on “So Fly” with SoBe artist Ce’Cile. SoBe artist Phyllisia and I have duets on “I’ll Be Good 2 You” and “Why Can’t We?” Also Ce’Cile and Shaggy are on the track “I’m Waiting.” Finally, upcoming Florida artist P. Chase appears on “Days of Our Lives.”

Po: When you are not making music, what are your other interests? Any hidden talents?

[laughs] No I don’t have any hidden talents. When I’m not making music, I’m spending time with my children and my family. I also paint and draw.

Po: Reading another interview you did, I seen that your are really into the "Word" (Bible). What's you favorite bible scripture and why?

My favorite scripture is Psalm 23; it’s the prayer that my dad gave and taught me as a child. It’s gotten me through a lot of hard times in my life and whenever I quote it, I find relief from any problems that I’m going through because the Lord is my Shepherd.

Po: What top three pieces of advice would you give aspiring artists?

I would say 1) Stay humble 2) Stay focused and 3) Keep God first in your life and everything else will fall into place.

Po: Now for the "politics". Let pretend your were campaigning for the "Best Album of 2009." What would be your campaign speech?

GRIII is one of the best R&B/ Hip/Hop albums of 2009. A future king of R&B, I’m bringing back the roots of soul music. GRIII will help my fans solve any problems and ease whatever they’re going through… take a listen.

Po: Once again, thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin". Any last words for the readers?

I just want to thank all of my fans for their support over my past two albums. I’ve worked very hard on this third album to bring them the R&B and Hip/Hop soul music we love so much. I hope they enjoy it as much as I did making it for them.

Artist Spotlight: Dj Excel "The Mixmaster"

1. Thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin". To start things off, can you tell the listeners a little bit about yourself?

Born in Boston now I live in New york, I am a remixer, and International Special Guest DJ

2. Okay, I know I might be a little slow but can you break your name down for me?

DJ Excel 'The Mixmaster' now people call me "International XL" because I travel around the world to dj. hahaha

3. I read that in 1990 you hosted a Hiphop show called "Another Def Jam" with DJ Audi on 90.3 FM WZBC Boston College Radio for two years, interviewing many of hip-hop greats such as Queen Latifah, Krs One, A Tribe Called Quest, MC Lyte, Kurtis Blow, Public Enemy, Nice & Smooth, DJ Premier, Guru, and Jeru Da Damaja. Can you tell me more about that experience? Who was your favorite guest?

It was the best thing I ever done because I was around all these artists before they were superstars. It was my first break into the music industry which subsequently lead me to move to New York.

Queen Latifah was my favorite guest. She was performing at the school and before her performance I inteviewed her. They locked us in a room all by ourselves. No security! She was so down to earth and elegant. Very respectful. I had the biggest crush on her for years.

4. What 3 tips would you give me as a radio host?

1. Ask the artist questions that they wouldn't expect. Dig deepr 2. Do Not be disrespectful or ask personal questions. 3. Remember they are people just like me and you. I try to connect and relate to them in some way.

5. Can you talk about the transition you made from radio hosting to DJing?

I was a rapper at the time (name RCA) and I didn't want to be gratuitous and play my own records; like hey "this is me" so I came up with this name "DJ Excel" after I started putting out remix records the name stuck and people would ask me to dj because they heard me on the radio and liked my mixes. Years later I would buy dj equipment and I became a dj.

6. In 1996, you left Boston to pursue a career in the music industry as a Producer/Remixer in NYC. I read that at the time you were frustrated and wanted to be taken seriously. Could you describe how you were feeling during that period in your life?

There was a guy in Boston who got a record deal with Universal records and I was envious. I wanted that success. Also, a couple of producers I was recording with had gotten there music in a movie soundtrack and we all went to New York for the premier. I was so envious. Happy for them, but I wanted the success. I felt living in Boston, no one in New York would take me serious. I felt that I had a better opportunity for success if people could see me, and feel me personally. I had done everything I felt I could in Boston and was very very popular in that region. I needed to grow. So I decided to move.

7. I heard that your mentor is the legendary DJ Red Alert could you talk about your relationship with him?

This dude would play my records on his radio show, back to back Hot 97 FM. I was selling them on vinyl. Every time he played my mixes, my records would sell out. That dude made me famous. He was one of first dj's to play my stuff. He always encouraged me to keep bringing him the hot stuff. We are friends till this day.

8. What are your views on mixtape dj's?

I love them to death. I grew up listening to Mr Cee, DJ Enuff, Doo Wop, etc. They were very vital to the growth of hiphop, now with the internet it's not as effective as a promotional tool.

9. Besides music, what are your other interest?

I love travelling and reading. I also like to watch mindless television shows to take a break from the music. I am working on videography and developing a TV show as we speak.

10. What advice would you give to aspiring dj's?

Find someone that's good and learn from them. Develop your craft, study hard and excel! (pun intended)

11. Once again, thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin". Any last words for the readers?

Model Spotlight: Dymond Scoby

1. Thanks for stopping by "Po Politickin". For starters, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

-Thank you for having me sweetie. Well for those who do not know; I am Dymond reppin the dmv area (dc. md. va.) I am a model/aspiring actress. So be on the lookout because I'm claiming 09 as my year.

2. I read that you are from Virginia, how was growing up in VA?

-I'm really from New Mexico but moved around so much I just claim VA since I’ve been here longer. But growing up in VA was a real learning experience. Got to be around the best of both worlds...I learned a lot growing up in the hood and the suburbs. I am very street smart and owe that to VA.

3. How did you get involved in modeling?

-Actually started out acting and just gave up after my last play. Was walking through the mall and a talent scout stopped me when I was like 14. Figured if he saw something in me, then the rest of the world will. Took it and ran with it now look at me.

4. I did my research and I discovered you were June 2008 "Jet Magazine Beauty of the Week"; can you talk about that experience?

-Now I owe that all to Tom from MySpace. (Lol) Ms. Raquel Riley, one of the photographers, seen my pics on MySpace and asked to shoot me for Jet. That was my 1st national magazine; I mean who doesn’t look at Jet. So that was very exciting

5. I also heard that you have a role in the upcoming movie "Notorious". Can you talk about role? How was the atmosphere on the set while recording?

-I play the role of a "hot girl" basically trying to get with biggie because he’s about to blow up. It was fun working with Derek Luke, Marc John Jefferies and the rest of the cast. It’s actually my first movie and the cast taught me a lot. I’ve always been a huge fan of bad boy and to be on the set and witness the life of big is just a blessing. Make sure everyone gets out there to theaters Jan 16. It’s a really good movie.

6. Besides modeling, what are your other interests?

-Definitely would be acting, fashion design, and massage therapy. I can throw down on a good massage (lol) you’re more than welcome to have a sample.

7. Where do you see yourself five years from now?

-having a successful career. I’ll probably branch off from modeling into acting full time and possibly have my own clothing line. We are looking into that now. Have some hot ideas.

8. Okay now it's time to "politick". Let's say the position you were running for was "the hottest model in 2009", what would be your campaign speech?

-I wouldn’t have to campaign. My fans have already voted me the hottest model of 09. So I guess all id have to say is "thank you very much"

9. Once again, I appreciate you stopping by. Any last words for the readers?

-Well thank you for having me Po. It was a pleasure. I’d like to give a shout out to my mom for always being there for me holding me down. My best friend/stylist Smokey, my cousin Shade for keeping me fly from NY,...Ray for believing in me and keeping it oh so real with me. I had to deal with a bunch of crap til' I met u babe. The whole cast and crew from Notorious for giving me the words of advice to keep grinding and letting me know I am a good actress. Love all my haters, keep hating, yell make me go even harder and stronger. Make sure everyone gets to theaters Jan 16.

Also you can find me on MySpace at myspace.com/dymondprinceces and check out my site at www.dymondXclusvice.com. And lastly pick up a calendar at throttleangels.com
