Artist Spotlight: Octavian

Po: Thanks for stopping by Po Politickin. For our first question, can you tell the listeners a little bit about yourself?

Octavian: First I want to say I appreciate the opportunity to be featured on your blog and it is a pleasure. I am 22 years-old, currently a college student at Bridgewater State College in Mass. I'm from Brockton, MA. I have been in the game now 4 1/2 years. I have collabed with some of the industries most prolific artists for my debut mixtape "Steet Credentialz Volume 1: Industry Status". I have collabed with Young Noble from Tupac's "Tha Outlawz", one of hip hops elite female MC's "Lady Luck", Former D-Block member J-Hood, and Mixtape Guru who is making noise all across the world "Statik Selektah" who hosted the mixtape. I am pushing my debut single "Hood Chick" Feat. up and coming R&B sensation Kallil. We are due to shoot the music video for "Hood Chick" May 1st and will be released mid-May. Bascically my grind, my hustle, my ambition, and my drive is second to none!!!

Po: How was it growing up in Brockton?

Octavian: Growing up in Brockton was rough for me. You know growing up with 3 other brothers and only my mom dukes. That sh*t was a reality check! Real Talk! We had to struggle for whatever we needed, I had no time for fun. I didn't grow up the typical way. At a young age i was taught the streets. My uncles bread it into me. They taught me young, beginning at age six. But, despite the hardships and turmoil I was able to prevail. I took it upon myself to veer away from that life style and yearned for better, not only for myself but for my family as well. So, while learning the streets, living that life, playing that role... behind closed doors I was reading, doing my homework, studying! Eventually I was introduced to Brockton High School Football and life from there on out wasn't too bad. I took it one day at a time. Graduated in the top of my class and now I am here with you doing this interview pushing my record "Hood Chick" to mainstream radio searching for a distribution deal.

Po: How would you describe your sound?

Octavian: My sound is original, raw, real, and controversial! I have no limits, no boundaries! I will spit about anything; the streets, politics, love, hate, hardships, struggles, commercial, anything. I am universal in that sense. i have influences from hip hop's greats from Tupac, Big Pun, Nas, Biggie, Big L, LL Cool J, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Run DMC, and the list continues. I ahve developed my own style, my own swag, and understand who I am as a young man, i have found myself. My sound is just me, feel me?

Po: How would you define the word “success”?

Octavian: For me the defintion of success is very simple, success is "doing what you set out to do and accomplishing your goals no matter how big or small." You can have success even if you just set a goal to be able to provide dinner for your children and you accomplish that goal. Success is something everyone should experience whether it be internal, personal, or infamous.

Po: What are your interest outside of music?

Octavian: Outside of music I have many interests. I love sports. As we speak I am currently a College football player for the Bridgewater State Bears. I am very interested in turning my entertainment company, "Viciouz Society Entertainment", into a major corporation. I am also intersted in starting communtiy service outreach programs as well as a college scholarships for those financially incapable for paying for tuition.

Po: Where do you see your career five years from now?

Octavian: 5 years from now if I'm not a major figure in the Entertainment Industry or Music Industry, I will take my degree and attain a government positition out here in Mass, coach high school or college football, provide for my family, and be extremely active in the community. No matter which path i will not fail!!!

Po: Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)

Octavian: Currently I am looking for a joint venture deal with a major label like Universal, Koch, Def Jam, etc... I am seeking a joint venture deal becasue i own an entertainment company and would like to put artisits out. I would love to break artists records and get them over the hump just as DJ Addition is trying to do with me.

Po: What advice would you give to aspiring rappers?

Octavian: For all those aspiring artists if you really want this, if this is something eating you, if this is your calling... Stay focused on the task at hand. Do not try to do 50 different things at once. Keep motivated, ambitious, and driven. If at anytime you feel this path is not for you and you cannot continue take a second and evaluate yourself and if you still do not know wherer your destiny lies, this industry is not for you, focus on other things you may excel at. This industry is full of "Great White Sharks" lurking in the depths ready to tear you apart, if your not ready for the challenge failure is iminent!

Po: Once again, thanks for stopping by Po Politickin. Any last words for the readers?

Octavian: To all those reading this interview I want to say good looks, I appreicate the love and support! With out ya'll I wouldn't be here right now. Keep supporting your boy, stay updated on all current Octavian news & events by going ot my website
www.octavianmusic.com ... you can acces my myspace page and facebbook page from that site. I wanna tell my mom dukes I LOVE YOU, my brothers, Jose, Carlos, and Peter y'all know what it is man. To my homies Teddy, Jemini, Dwizzy, Money Mike, my cousin Nene, and all the rest, I got YOU. THA TIME IS NOW, LET'S GET IT!!!

Artist Spotlight: Jemini

Po: Thanks for stopping by Po Politickin. For our first question, can you tell the listeners a little bit about yourself?

Jemini: Thanks for having me fam. Well, my name is Jemini and I'm an indie hip hop artist from Brockton, Ma. I have a single out right now off my debut album "I Am Jem". The single is called "Bump It". Its available online for download. Radio is showing it mad love. I hope ya'll request it and support it.

Po: How was it growing up in Boston?

Jemini: I was actually born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It was real tough out there. As a youngn' I saw a lot of things a child wasn't suppose to see so when we got to Boston (specifically Brockton), the hardest thing for me was adjusting to the new environment.

Po: What's your musical background? How long have you been rapping?

Jemini: I produce music. I play the keys and I graduated from the New England Institute of Art with an Associate Degree in Audio Engineering back in 2007. Man, I've been rapping since junior high school. Since the 8th grade. Those were the good ol days.

Po: How do you describe your music to people?

Jemini: Honestly, my music is fresh hip hop. You know, that no holds barred hip hop. I'd like to think for every song that I write, there's a powerful feeling that my audience receive from it, you feel me?

Po: What are your immediate music career goals?

Jemini: I want to continue to be heard because I got something important to say. I want to make people connect with hip hop again. I'd love to keep making music for as long as God let's me man. I want to give people something new. My ultimate goal is to be successful at maintaining the raw edge in hip hop and still have a commercial appeal.

Po: What are your interests outside of music?

Jemini: Well, let's see. I'm an artist so I love drawing and painting portraits and abstract pieces. I also like playing ball and watching movies. But ever since I started making music, I haven't had the time to do anything else, honestly. We just wrapped up my first mixtape entitled "Here I Am" which is hosted by the world famous Statik Selektah. Fat shouts to Statik for holding it down. The mixtape will be dropping first week of April. Look for it online.

Po: Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)

Jemini: Not really. I mean, I'm signed independently to Mr Wizard Records, which is based in Brockton, shout out to Wayne Horton, but if the right offer comes along to merge, then we merge. I am looking for distribution though for my debut album, "I Am Jem".

Po: What advice would you give to aspiring rappers?

Jemini: My main advice to ya'll is recognize that this is not a game. Its a 24/7 career. If you are truly in it, you need to be inspired, motivated, dedicated, driven, and ambitious all of the time. You cannot fall back at all because someone else is trying to reach the same goal and they're probably moving just as hard. It sounds cliche but go hard or go home and please give us something new and creative. Hip hop needs it.

Po: Once again, thanks for stopping by Po Politickin. Any last words for the readers?

Jemini: As a matter of fact, shout out to Po Politickin for giving indie music a chance to be heard. Also, please check out my official single "Bump It" which is available at iTunes, Amazon mp3 and everywhere else online. The radios have the record so contact your local station and request it. Hip hop needs your support and I represent for hip hop. Please support independent music because we carry the torch, you feel me? Also, hit me up at
www.myspace.com/kingjemini and check out the videos on Youtube. Also, visit the blog at www.jeminiuniverse.blogspot.com for news and updates. Check out my homie Octavian's hit single, "Hood Chick" featuring Kallil. Request it too. Viciouz Society in the building. Oc and I have a string of documentaries that we will be filming so make sure you tune in for that. Fat shouts to DJ Addition for holding it down and all of the radio stations and clubs for the love and support. Remember to support indie hip hop. Stay tuned for the official "Bump It" video coming real soon. Stay blessed ya'll. One love.

Chris Brown & Rihanna "From a Player’s Prospective"

From: Original White Folks
Ask A Player
www.askarealplayer.com

First, let me qualify myself. I have spent over 40 years living by my wits on the hard streets of America’s major cities. Contrary to today’s hip hop definition of a player, (one that has sex with multiple partners); I am the textbook example of a player, (i.e. players exercise superior wit and street knowledge to manipulate people, situations and opportunities to their advantage for financial gain.) Otherwise known as Game (or big business). So, before I begin, I want to plainly state that I am an old school player with the class, style and flair of a true gentleman. I deal in absolute stark reality… THE BUTT NAKED TRUTH!

DISCLAIMER

If I offend anyone in the course of discussing the absolute truth, I would like to sincerely say… “kindly take notice of the piece of mistletoe attached to my coat-tail. “ Folks

The Boston Globe reports: Nearly half of the 200 Boston teenagers interviewed for an informal poll said pop star, Rihanna was responsible for the beating she allegedly took at the hands of her boyfriend, fellow music star Chris Brown in February.

I think they’re on to something here. These kids have a more realistic view of real life as a young adult.

Everyone, from the local McDonald’s employee to the likes of Oprah, Tyra Banks, Donald Trump and Ellen has included their 2 cents. It has been said that the incident between the two pop stars stems from Chris Brown’s alleged long term sexual involvement with his manager, 39 year old Tina Davis. According to reports, Rihanna became enraged after seeing a sexually suggestive text message from Tina Davis on Chris’ phone en route to the Grammy Awards. Rihanna then “pimp slapped” Chris while he was driving. Now, after being slapped while navigating through traffic, what would the average man, women or child’s response consist of? It’s called self defense. Crash! Bang! Zapp! Kapow! Rihanna not only disrespected Chris’ manhood, attacking him, but endangered his life as well. Keep in mind that all of this happened at the spur of the moment. This is not a dress rehearsal people, this is REAL LIFE. Come on, get off your politically correct high horses and deal with reality! Real life is what happens when no one is looking.

If everyone’s life were played out on the World Wide Web, TMZ, Oprah, Tyra, Access Hollywood, Ellen or the Dr. Phil show, real life would become extinct. We all may as well get a Hollywood or TV land script and start practicing our lines.

Chris & Rihanna did not immediately release statements regarding the incident, leaving themselves room to work it out. If left alone to their own devices, human instinct and emotions would guide them to sort it out the old fashioned way. If today’s methods of intervention, public airing and talk show host’s advice were practiced back in the day, a lot of us would never have been born. However did our grandparents and parents make it without celebrity comments and talk shows?

Furthermore, what is the real value of Ellen, Oprah, Tyra or Donald’s advice? Oprah hasn’t had a man since Moby Dick was a minnow, and I don’t think Gail has slapped her lately; Tyra couldn’t hold on to Will Smith because he said she was “too white”; Donald was unable to keep either his wife Ivana or his last hairdresser; and, Ellen is married to a woman! If the people with all of this useless advice about relationships (which they don’t have) and politically correct storybook, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm opinions would back up, these two young people will find their way. Trust me it’s been happening for thousands of years.

Puffy is the only celebrity with enough game, understanding and real life experience to offer the troubled couple any real support. Chris and Rihanna’s time spent at Sean Combs Miami home, without the prying eyes and ears of paparazzi, politically correct, ratings seekers, and groupies may very well have been their saving grace.

Now, on to Chris Brown’s legal problems as a result of his response to Rihanna’s attack. At least someone in Chris’ camp has game. If the rumors of them getting married are true, that’s good game and sound legal advice. It’s my understanding that Chris’ lawyers have negotiated a plea bargain to a misdemeanor for him. Of course, based upon the extent of the testimony in the case a judge is not bound by such agreement. Thus, if the judge believes a felony is warranted he/she can refuse to accept the plea and proceed with felony prosecution.

I have a question at this juncture. When will Rihanna be arrested and tried for hitting Chris Brown? Where are all of the domestic violence advocates, critics and talk show hosts on that issue?? No ratings value on that subject, huh?

So, by marrying Rihanna Chris will be effectively preventing her from being subpoenaed to testify in his “assault” case. This move eliminates the possibility of his misdemeanor plea being rejected and saves him from becoming a convicted felon.

Po: Thanks for stopping by Po Politickin, could you tell us a little bit about yourself? I was reading that you was from Nashville, Tenn?

MTK: That's right. I was born in Nashville. Now I'm in college right outside the city.

Po: What is your music background? How long have you been rapping?

MTK: I've been rapping for almost 9 years now. I really owe that to my parents. Growing up, they exposed me to all different kinds of music. My mom even had me freestyling.

Po: Who are your musical influences?

MTK: Nas, Big L, Jadakiss, Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, even Will Smith. The list goes on as far as MCs, but also Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane.

Po: How do you describe your music to people?

MTK: My music is intellectual. I won't stress how "real" it gets, because too many rappers do that nowadays, but It's different, innovative and is more focused on the common people. Overall, I mainly speak from a regular guy's perspective.

Po: What image do you think your music conveys?

MTK: Hopefully, my music breaks the stereotypes of southern MCs. I hope my music shows a positive image of whatever I'm involved with.

Po: What are your immediate music career goals?

MTK: Finish another tape, do more shows, and keep getting press/promotion.

Po: Who's your Top 5 Rappers? Top 5 Albums?

MTK: Jadakiss, Nas, Big L, Joe Budden and Rakim. My top 5 albums are It Was Written, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Ironman, The Low End Theory, and The Minstrel Show

Po: Do you have any interests outside of music?

MTK: Being in college, I had to nerd it out (lol). I'm pretty big on video games and football. I also like to cook

Po: Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)

MTK: I'd prefer an independent deal. Indies are taking back control, and they're giving more freedom and more money to these artists.

Po: What advice would you give to aspiring rappers?

MTK: Stay consistent, stay true to yourself, and have a back-up plan.

Po: Can you discus your current projects?

MTK: I'm currently working on 3 tapes right now. The first one is 6:15 Day Dreamsz with Black Noize, who's also from Nashville. The single, "Tha Best" with KDV was recently featured on Datpiff's newest compilation mixtape. 6:15 Day Dreamsz will be hosted by DJ Lady T. I'm also working on my next solo mixtape Raw Material, which will be hosted by Mick Boogie and Mix Master Maize. I'm taking people back to the 90s with that one. Finally, I'm working on my debut EP The 8-Track. The 8-Track is alot of stories and concepts condensed into 8 songs. No features, but production includes Rob Reed, Tactik, Opie, Snare Jordan, Bhon, Teckniq and True.

Po: Once again thanks for stopping by Po Politickin, any last words for the readers?

MTK: First off, thanks to Po for even giving me a shot. Shout outs go to KDV, GDup, Vithym, Rob Doe, Mark II and the Family, Black Magic, DJ Legacy, DJ Modesty, DJ Mor, Skyzoo, Panaramic View, Soundmind, J.Roca, Fresh City, I.V.Y. League, Rare Breed, and if I miss anyone, it's all love. I know too many people. Check out the music at

Terrell Owens released

So now T.O. has effectively burned his bridges with 3 different NFL teams. It makes you wonder when people will just stop trying with him. Every place Owens has gone, it has ended the same way, with the team cutting ties with him mostly because of his negative locker room influence.

'Fool me once.. Shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thrice......?, Fool me four times? Then what are you then? A damn fool, I say. ' My thoughts on the Owens release....

- Good move for the Dallas Cowboys. It is likely that Owens performance on the field, can no longer at least answer the question of 'Why would you keep such a divisive influence around?', as he struggled last season, and was no longer the player he was in previous years. He has a lost a step. While he is still good, he most likely isn't worth the baggage he brings. While I think team chemistry is overrated, for all intents and purposes Owens is toxic waste in the locker room.

-Roy E. Williams needs to step up now, and prove to Dallas that he was worth all the picks they gave up for him. He, for the moment, is the #1 WR on the team. The guy is very talented, but his mental makeup, and his loud mouth concerns you a little bit with him. With the laissez faire coaching they have in Dallas, I find it hard to believe that he will be properly motivated.

- I would be surprised if Jason Witten's #s don't take a hit. He's an excellent tight end, but he also benefited from the constant attention that Owens garnered. He'll still be very good, but I doubt he approaches the numbers he put up the last two seasons. I'm not saying he'll be a league worst TE, just not the league's most productive TE.

- How is it that Owens is out of a job, but Wade Phillips still has a job as a head coach? I'm not disputing the Owens release, as I think its the right timing to go through with it given Owens' locker room presence and his declining play on the field. I'm still in sheer shock, especially with the way the season ended, that the NFL's biggest figurehead has a job. What exactly has Phillips done that has warranted he still have this job? I wonder if Jerry Jones watched the final game of the regular season. Wade should have been fired at halftime.

- Also, there is plenty of WR talent in the draft for the Cowboys to pursue if they choose to go that route. Maybe they can find their Eddie Royal in the draft. Who knows, maybe Miles Austin or Sam Hurd steps up and captures the #2 spot. I wouldn't hold my breath on that but it is possible.

- How will this affect Tony Romo? I think this cuts down his interceptions by a few, and more importantly keeps his sanity in tact. Generally, barring a trade that brings a bonafide number one wide receiver in there, I think Tony's numbers will take a slight hit. What it does to the Cowboys in the W-L section will be something to watch.

- As far as teams Owens can end up with, I believe he can end up with the Redskins or Raiders. I mean Snyder has already opened up the pocket book for one loud mouthed egomaniac in DeAngelo Hall, so who's to say he won't open it up for Owens? Him and Hall can have screaming matches in practice or competitions to see who has the bigger ego, it would be a sight to behold. And the Raiders are....well, the Raiders. Do I need to go any further?

Boy I can't wait until the draft, then training camp, and the regular season. The itch for football needs to be scratched and scratched soon. Maybe the start of the baseball regular season will alleviate that itch, but only time will tell.

Today Matt Cassel was traded, along with Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for a second round pick. But a bigger story was the fact that Jay Cutler was supposedly dangled out there in an attempt by Josh McDaniels to land Matt Cassel. Cassel, who is now a Chief, worked with McDaniels last season when Tom Brady went down with a season ending knee injury. Conflicting reports, and sidebars have been going around on this all day. One minute you hear, that Denver has been dangling him in trade talks, and then the next minute you hear that Denver was approached. There is no way of any of us knowing, without inside information which side of the equation is true. I'm going to go with the Denver has been dangling him side of the story, since you don't normally hear the name of a young franchise QB in trade talks EVER. To me, that says that the Broncos had to at least be leading on that he could be available. Now to my thoughts:

-I think the notion that Cassel is better than Cutler, or is worth trading or potentially eternally pissing off Cutler is absolutely ridiculous. I mean, when I heard this and read the unfolding drama that then came after this I couldn't help but say several times, 'All this for a bum quarterback?'. Seriously this is Matt Cassel, we are talking about. The guy who looked lost for the majority of last season, the guy who besides AFC West teams, compiled an absolutely mediocre 13 TDs to 10 INTs, the guy who was essentially playing on a record setting offense, with possibly the biggest changing threat in the NFL, the guy who looked absolutely putrid against any halfway decent defense he played against all year. Yeah, that guy. Whenever I read a trade rumor involving any current or ex Patriot, I feel like I am in the twilight zone.

- I find it funny how a brand new coach comes in, fresh off riding the coattails of Bill Belichick (See: Weis, Charlie, and Crennel, Romeo) and his first important order of business is trying to move Jay Cutler, the Broncos franchise player, and a 24 year old top 10 quarterback. And assuming that the Broncos are the ones that have initiated the talks, it says a lot about the classic Patriot arrogance (Believe me I am a Notre Dame fan, and Charlie Weis for someone who has accomplished jack as a head coach just OOZES arrogance). It's one thing if Jay Cutler was someone like Matt Schaub, but he isn't, he's a young, super talented, productive QB who also happens to be a fan favorite. So McDaniels is willing to piss off Cutler (if the potential trade fell through like it did), and have the entire city of Denver lined up against him and calling for his head at every opportunity for......... Matt 'I have no pocket presence, and can't throw anything deep for the life of me' Cassel? Interesting.

- So, once again assuming that Denver management is behind this, isn't this quite the confidence in a coach who comes from a Coaching Tree that has not ONE TIME, produced an even respectable head coach? So, let's say the Broncos go ahead and trade Jay Cutler, then what happens if McDanels and Cassel both flop, which given history is actually very likely? Not only do you need a new head coach, now you have to start over at the QB position, because you gave free reign to a coach who has proven absolutely nothing. I'm sure that would go over well. I guess McDaniels wanted someone who has no sense of what a pocket is, but can throw the 5 yard come back route like a champ!!

-Apparently, Bill Belichick is the only reason Jay Cutler is still in a Broncos uniform as he supposedly rejected a trade that would have netted him the #12 overall pick instead of the second round pick he did get. Perhaps, he was trying to stick it to McDaniels or help out Pioli. Which one remains to be seen, but if not for the Patriot ties we are probably talking about the Buccaneers acquisition of Cutler, while only giving up a 3rd round pick. Perhaps he had a gentleman's agreement with Piolo and just went through with it. Who knows?

- After reading Cutler's initial comments, which were taken somewhat out of context, I thought he was being a bit of a drama queen but after reading the whole transcript of the interview with Chris Mortensen I thought he was just being his usual candid self. Sometimes, his candid nature, and him taking things too hard can be his downfall. Watching him as much as he has, when something goes wrong, he tends to take it hard and try even harder to avenge the wrongdoing often times by forcing a throw. I do think that Cutler is the reason this is even a story given his comments and how he apparently feels spurned but I can't fault him for his honesty. He was just being honest with the way he felt, and not your usual PC athlete. 'You have to respect the other team, they are a good team, regardless of who the team is'. My favorite in this regard is Bill Belichick after a game with the Jets in 2005, 'Brooks Bollinger is a threat at the QB position, as he can throw the ball and run the ball, you have to gameplan for him and worry about him because he is dangerous. Really, Bill!

- To the readers, I want you to put your thinking caps on for a second. Can you name ONE player who New England traded or released who actually went on to be good for another team? And by good, I mean good, not passable, average, intangibles and magic laden, flat out good. Ty Law? Lawyer Milloy? Deion Branch? David Givens? Willie McGinest? What makes anyone think this will be any different?

- What is so special about Matt Cassel? Asides from AFC West opponents, all of which were mediocre, he compiled 13 TDs to 10 INTs as I stated earlier. His pocket presence is brutally bad. His accuracy on anything even remotely considered deep is pitiful. Randy Moss playing with a decent QB, puts up 15+ TDs this season. Seriously, the guy performed admirably on what was previously a record setting offense. He has mediocre stamped all over him. For the record I think Tyler Thigpen is a better quarterback than Cassel, and barring a trade, I feel bad for the young man. He proved he can ball last year in horrific playing conditions (ie horrific head coach, no offensive line, no defense) and kept that team in games, and now he loses his job to an overrated, system quarterback. Maybe Pioli (and McDaniels for that matter) wanted someone who can execute the checkdown. Lord knows Cassel performs it more and better than anyone else.

-If Cutler proves to actually be on the trading block, half the NFL should be giving calls to Denver, including the New York Jets. As of right now I have no faith in the Jets, but if they manage to pull a miracle and get Cutler for a non Hershcel Walker type of package, my faith will be somewhat restored.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
