Artist Spotlight: Kil Ripkin

Hip Hop is a culture that was created by and for the people, and when it comes to exibiting that love and passion for the art, nobody displays it like Kil Ripkin the Genereal, AKA The Ghetto Correspondent. Describing his music as soulful, truthful, spiritual and rebelious. Kil stopped by Po Politickin to discusses his musical career thus far.

Po: Sup Kil, thanks for stopping by. For our first question, could you describe a day in the life of Kil Ripkin?

Kil Ripkin: I wake up early in the morning, usually express my daily appetite by letting my pen touch the ink. Once I’ve hit either a sixteen or more, I wake my family up, and then depending on the day, I either hit the studio or the job. I do what I need to do in the studio; some cats go to the studio and smoke or drink and relax. I’m the opposite. I go into the studio prepared with a plan to one take and leave. I’m all about staying focused right now. Once I leave the studio I come home and spend time with my family. I usually contact my manager, Phill Roche, to make sure we are on the same page. I review potential beats, shows, and suggestions.
But I really don’t have a typical day. I could be shooting a video in New York with Torae one week, and the next week doing a photo shoot or playing a show. In the music business I feel a typical usually doesn’t exist.

Po: By listening to your music, I could tell that you are a very revolutionary and conscious artist? Could you discuss this? Do you believe that you will be able to reach mainstream with this type of music?

Kil Ripkin: My music is all based on my character. It is so important in my values to always maintain the truth. The revolutionary reference is something people have labeled me, but I guess it reflects the experiences I have gone through and my story, so if you want to call it a revolutionary one I’m not mad at that. I definitely have been able to reach the mainstream with my music. The more music I put out the more I realize I have no Kil Ripkin fan demographic. I mean for me to come out Coney Island what some refer to as the hood and have fans in the Hamptons is direct evidence that I am reaching the mainstream. Also what you’re seeing is a overall call for more music with integrity and spirit, people are sick of the garbage.

Po: Who were your musical influences and what would be a dream collaboration for you (Rapper, Singer, Producer)?

Kil Ripkin: Growing up in New York my musical influences were the rappers that were in my neighborhood or in my borough. Hands down Notorious B.I.G. because you could take him and have him flow over anything no questions asked. I would also say other pioneers from New York, Rakim, and Slick Rick. But I would definitely say Rakim for his complex lyrical crafting.

Po: We met thru the world wide web lol so I wanted you to discuss the importance of the internet to artist.

Kil Ripkin: The internet is an extremely helpful and reliable tool for marketing and exposure. Today it seems to be a lot more about social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and more than going store to store with a tape. If you become an internet sensation the whole world now recognizes you, so the net is extremely important in the music business.

Po: What's your current label situation? Do you have any current projects out?

Kil Ripkin: I am signed to Soulspazm Records out in New York. I have four projects completed and a handful of videos waiting to be released. The first of these projects will be released at the end of the summer. I got a mixtape coming out with Chicago producer, The Exceptionalist, Tony Roche. I also have a project coming out with Atlanta producer, Raticus, and of course the album, The Balancing Act. I also have an album finished with Torae for our group The Coalescence. Besides that I am doing collabs with a lot of cats, but I can’t really talk about it because it is still early.

Po: Thanks for stopping by homie, appreciate it, could tell us where we can check out more of your music?

Kil Ripkin: Check me out at
myspace.com/kilripkin, 2dopeboyz and type Kil Ripkin in. All the blogs out there, twitter.com/kilripkin. Look also for a website dropping soon at www.kilripkin.com

Artist Spotlight: Sullee J

Baltimore emcee Sullee J describes his music as a refreshing new voice of hope for his generation. His music exposes internal human struggles along with society's problems. Sullee J's music promotes positive action and personal enlightenment, as he writes from a deep inner reflection upon his life and environment.

Sullee J has been getting his tour on, working with acts such as Cash Money Records Jay Sean, DJ Whoo Kid, and International stars Lomaticc, Baba Khan and Sunny Brown. Most recently, Sullee J opened for Mos Def in Norway, Oslo City.

Sullee J stopped by Po Politickin to discuss his career thus far..

Po: Sup Sullee J, thanks for stopping bye. I read that your music, "Exposes internal human struggles as well as society's problems". Could you explain this?

Sullee J: Hey Po, What’s good! I feel like sometimes I may have went through almost everything besides death, and have been close to it several times. Instead of writing about the incidents, more so I like to talk about how to get through them, and provide some sort of guidance through my music. Human struggles, mean scenario’s like relationships, addiction, rape, poverty, and societies problems revolve around racism, democracy, stereotypes, hate crimes, and such.

Po: I see you are from Baltimore. When did you fall in love with hip hop? Who are some of your musical influences?

Sullee J: Man, I grew up loving hip hop, I always felt like music was like a getaway for me. When no one understands you, and you don’t feel like hearing no one out, just turn up a song you can relate to and kick it. Growing up, I wrote poetry for the most part, usually about how I felt, and situations I would come across or even see. I was so addicted to the rhythm, even in school; all of my notes would become rhymes. Eventually, I started to post up my work and people told me I should try to put it over a beat, which I did and it brought me where I am today. My musical influences, I look at more than just the publicity of a person, or how much money they are getting, I like people like Pac, DMX, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, basically artist who say something meaningful and are trying to open eyes.

Po: In the next two years, what's your top 3 career goals?

Sullee J: Tour, Go platinum with the album we are creating because it’s going to be a classic, and be on every speaker/TV/radio that exists.

Po: I seen you recently opened for Mos Def in Norway, I am sure that was supadope.. How was that experience?

Sullee J: Hell yea! It was amazing, the crowd was ridiculous, I loved Norway, the people are real supportive, and of course Mos Def being one of my biggest inspirations, it was like a dream for me to be on the same stage. Shout outs to Dee J Unica for making that happen!

Po: What's your label situation? Do you have any current projects out?

Sullee J: Label wise, I have a few offers on the table that Im just waiting out on to see more opportunities, I believe the more and more fame I keep getting, the better chances that keep coming. I believe in myself 100% and God, so I know when It’s the right time to get signed, it will happen, right now I got to stay on the move, on my grind. I do have a few projects I am working on right now, one of the biggest ones is a tour which should be in November, more information will be released on that soon, I should be in this upcoming XXL issue of August 2010. Maria Monique Last Wish foundation is a globally acclaimed charity which has picked me up as an artist, that I will be supporting them by making them a theme song, as well as flying out to Indonesia around end of July, beginning of August to visit different villages and help, earthquake victims, paralyzed and terminally ill children. You can see the article they posted on me at - http://mariamonique.org/sulee-j-will-be-helping-the-mmlwf.html

Po: Thanks for stopping bye, is there anything you would like to say to your fans?

Sullee J: No Problem, it was my pleasure, and to all my fans I love you! And I can’t do it without you, you might hear that from a lot of mouths, but it’s true. I won’t let you down!

Chaneblog: One Day At A Time

What's good? This blog is about life and being healthy in general. On a whole we take things for granted everyday from our partners to being able to have food to eat. Being alive another day is a blessing, and think to yourself, how often do you celebrate it. I recently suffered a mild stroke. Didn't even know I had it. But what I can tell you it provided a much needed wake up call for me. I didn't have to survive and be here to tell about it. I am truly blessed. Its not about age. Its about stress and the things we stress really. Some things are beyond our control. When we make them an issue in our own lives, stress begins to play a major factor. I walk a lot slower now. I have been doing a lot of self analysis as well. People perceive me as always being on th go, hustling and that very much is me. However, I realized I have to slow down. My son isn't even 3 yrs old yet. I have to be for him if anyone because he is the future. He carries on my legacy. And tt really means a lot to me. Until the next time, yall be safe and well!

Chaneblog: Mixtapes

What's good everyone, I hope all is well. This blog is about what miixtapes can do for an artist. Besides get you signed, a mixtape also helps gets the creative juices flowing. I have gotten a ton of ideas just being recording my own mixtapes. Not to mention it allows you to use yer voice more and experiement with different cadences which give the track more personality. It also allows for freedom as far as subject matter and song selection as well. It actually helps cultivate your artistry. When I record I flip the instrumental into a whole new song as well. I am going to release a bunch as the ideas keep coming to be on the look out for those. Uno!

Mark Milly, "F%@kMarkMilly:The Brief Tape" (Mixtape)

That is something you never want to say to anyone is it? However, Baltimore artist Mark Milly has changed the connotation of saying #FuckMarkMilly (popular Twitter lingo, with adding the hash tag). Over the past month or so it has been an on-going joke with his friends about saying #FuckMarkMilly and he thought why not turn this saying into a nationally known phrase. Never at any point was it used to be negative but actually to be something funny and made the people wonder why they were even saying it. Well, now you will find out. With this project being his first official summer release, Mark Milly has a power packed body of music for your enjoyment.

This hot summer project, one that will definitely keep the ear buds in your ear is powered by SoVain Magazine & The Incredible Creation. Just for your fun music facts, the track titled "How Can I?" is a sample of 80's R&B sensation Lisa Fischer's "How Can I Ease The Pain" and that will be a favorite by all who listen to #FuckMarkMilly. To follow Mark Milly and his journey visit him @MarkMilly and be amazed by the "incredible creation" he is and why the people say #FuckMarkMilly, but in a positive way of course.
